Monday
Performing Arts

Performing arts enhance a child's social-emotional learning and grow their confidence. On Mondays, students learn the basics of music and are introduced to various instruments. They rehearse songs, train in improvisation techniques, and practice presentation skills. Presentations start simple (e.g., show and tell) and progress to preparing simple oral reports and eventually performing short stories and short poem recitations. Students will have occasional take-home assignments for performing arts topics that parents will help them complete and practice to deliver in class.
Tuesday
Culture and Cuisine

On Tuesdays, students will learn about another country and their culture. They will tour important historical sites, learn customs, practice phrases from another language, and prepare a traditional meal. The cooking lesson will also include a nutrition lesson. For example, when learning about India, students go on a virtual tour of the Taj Mahal, learn traditions surrounding Diwali, and prepare specialty meals with chicken, paneer, and lentils to identify different sources of protein and understand how our body uses protein. We will spend 2-3 Tuesdays per country.
Wednesday
Science

Science has a way of sparking the imagination and love for learning in children and adults alike. At the Apiary, science is our special passion. Our lessons will take advantage of our flexible outdoor time. Our students will be junior naturalists, learning how to observe (scavenger hunts), measure (using basic tools such as rulers and scales), categorize (the many forms of life), and care for the world around them. They will see their world through new perspectives from the microscopic scale to the astronomical scale. They will also learn more about their own bodies, how they work and how to keep them healthy.
Thursdays
Thursdays will cover any parts of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) kindergarten curriculum that does not fit neatly into daily and special instruction (for example, jobs around the community.) This day will be used for reinforcement of any topics that need extra time and attention. We will use this time to build more meaningful connections among the themes in the curriculum, provide deeper learning, and prepare students to take full advantage of upcoming field trip Fridays. We will make sure our students are well-prepared when they transition to the next grade.
